Gudauta is located on flat terrain between Gagra and Sukhumi. From here, it is convenient to take short trips along the entire coast. Gudauta railway station receives long-distance trains, while minibuses to neighboring villages are always waiting by the city market. Plan active trips between May and October, when mountain roads are dry and safe. If you are unsure whether this resort is suitable for a longer stay, see the analysis in the article “Abkhazia’s Resorts 2026: How to Choose the Perfect Holiday Destination”.

Walking Tour of the Center: Landmarks, Park, and Waterfront

Start your city route at the railway station and head downhill toward the sea. Along the way, you will come across a monument to V. I. Lenin—treat it simply as a landmark; there is no need to make a detour specifically to see it. The straight road leads to Central Park, with tall trees and benches in the shade.

Immediately beyond the park stands the Colonnade, where the waterfront promenade begins.

The waterfront here is broad, without dense development or noisy cafés. The Tea Factory building is about a 15-minute walk from the central streets. The facility periodically changes its operating format, so check on site with the security staff whether it is possible to enter the grounds, buy tea, or visit the production area.

Gudauta’s Beaches: A Brief Overview of Location and Facilities

The resort’s shoreline is spacious. The surface is mixed: pebbles often alternate with strips of dark sand. The entry into the water is gentle, with no sharp drop-offs. Changing rooms are installed on the central beach, and during the season local vendors rent out umbrellas and sun loungers. On the outskirts, a wild stretch begins with no infrastructure at all. Check the condition of the seabed visually on the day you swim.

Lykhny: Temple Complex and Travel by Public Transport

The historic village of Lykhny and the Lykhnashta gathering meadow are located about 5 kilometers from Gudauta. It is easy to get there without a car: take a minibus near the central city market. The journey takes about 10 minutes, but check the exact departure point and the time of the next service with the drivers at the square.

The main attraction here is Lykhny Church.

This is the active Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God. The building was constructed in the second half of the 10th–11th centuries, and a unique 14th-century fresco cycle has been preserved inside. When entering the complex, observe the dress code: cover your shoulders and knees; women will need a headscarf.

Abahuatsa Fortress: Access, Walking Section, and Safety Precautions

The ruins of Abahuatsa Fortress stand on a wooded hill 10 kilometers from the city. Historians date the fortification to different periods, with possible dates ranging from the 6th–8th to the 11th–13th centuries.

Abakhuatsa Fortress is an ancient fortification near Gudauta. It attracts history lovers and offers views over the surrounding hills and valleys.

There is no public transport to the ruins. Take a taxi from central Gudauta or get a ride to the foot of the hill. From there, you will have to walk uphill along a trail. There are no ticket offices, guards, or barriers here, and entry to the grounds is free. The stones on the walls are slippery, so wear closed athletic shoes with good traction and watch your step carefully.

“Pride” Lion Park: Location and What to Check Before Your Visit

“Pride” Lion Park is located in the village of Aatsy, about 12 kilometers from central Gudauta. It is a spacious area where visitors observe predators and camels from safe elevated walkways.

Navigation apps sometimes direct visitors along dead-end dirt roads, so check the best route with local taxi drivers before setting out. Check the current opening hours, animal feeding times, and ticket prices in advance at the park ticket office.

One-Day Itinerary: Sequence and Timing

If you have just one full day, follow this plan:

  • 09:00 — 10:30: Walk around the center. Take the route from the station through Central Park to the Colonnade and waterfront.
  • 10:30 — 11:00: Walk to the Tea Factory and check whether it is possible to visit.
  • 11:30 — 13:30: Travel to Lykhny by minibus from the market. Visit the church and Lykhnashta meadow, then return to the city for lunch.
  • 14:30 — 16:30: Take a taxi to the foot of Abahuatsa Fortress. Climb to the tower and take in the panorama.
  • 17:00 — 19:00: Travel to the village of Aatsy to visit “Pride” Lion Park. Toward evening, the heat subsides and the animals come out of the shade.

If One Day Is Not Enough for All the Stops: What to Leave for Your Next Trip

The schedule above involves frequent travel. If you do not have a car or are traveling with small children, split the locations between two days. On the first day, take a leisurely walk around central Gudauta, spend some time at the beach, and travel to Lykhny by minibus. Leave the climb over the slippery stones of Abahuatsa Fortress and the visit to the lion park for a second outing, combining them by booking one car.

Trips Beyond the Local Route

Gudauta is a convenient starting point for trips to the main natural attractions. The drive to Lake Ritsa and Gegsky Waterfall takes about an hour and a half by car. Options for organized excursions and trip prices are collected in the article “What to Do in Gudauta in 2026: Excursions, Entertainment, and Prices”.

Be sure to set aside half a day for neighboring New Athos. The main attraction there is the impressive New Athos Simon the Canaanite Monastery on the mountainside.

📍 Ново-Афонский Симоно-Кананитский монастырь

The New Athos Simon-Canaanite Monastery is a monumental complex on the slope of Iverian Mountain, one of the largest monasteries in Abkhazia and a must-visit site of the resort.

Where to Stay in Gudauta for Your Chosen Route Format

Choose your accommodation area based on your plans. If you are planning frequent trips by minibus, look for rooms in the center, closer to the market. If peace and proximity to the water are your priorities, look for accommodation on the outskirts. One good example is SofiAnna Recreation Center. Prices as of 08.10.2026 for a two-night stay: from ₽2353 per night for one person or a couple; from ₽2942 per night for a family with one or two children.
